ADU Interior Design Ideas

Designing an ADU that’s both functional and stylish requires more than just a great floor plan—interior design is key to making the most of a small space. Smart design choices, like using light colors to brighten the area or incorporating multi-functional furniture, can turn even the most compact ADU into a welcoming and comfortable retreat. Whether you’re planning for family, guests, or future renters, the right design decisions can maximize space, enhance functionality, and create a home that feels spacious and inviting.
Choose Your Style Wisely
Are you looking for an interior that feels traditional and homey, like a backyard cottage or a modern farmhouse, or do you prefer a sleek, minimalist design? Do you want to play up California’s coastal vibes or mirror your main house’s Spanish aesthetic? There is no right or wrong answer. Often, it’s a matter of personal style. Homeowners should consider who will ultimately be living there, whether it is in-laws, guests, or someone else, and how the style of the ADU blends with the style of the primary residence.
If you are hoping to use your ADU as a source of monthly rent or additional income, choosing the right design style is especially important, as many of today’s renters tend to prefer simple lines and lots of aesthetic appeal.
Opt for Light & Bright
In California, the maximum size for ADUs is generally around 1200 square feet. This isn’t very big, but you can make the space feel bigger by choosing light, bright, neutral wall colors. These light colors will accentuate and amplify the natural lighting in the space, making it feel open and airy instead of dark and cramped.
Create Smart Pops of Color
Light and bright walls can help the space feel bigger than it is, but a total lack of color will make an ADU space feel cold. Look for ways you can add pops of color throughout the space, whether it is through rugs, accent walls, wall porcelain tiles, a piece of furniture, or painted kitchen cabinets.
Go Big With Artwork
When dealing with smaller spaces, many clients’ natural inclination is to opt for small wall hangings. But in our experience, small wall hangings actually make the space seem smaller. Oversizing your artwork will make the space feel bigger while also adding an element of luxury.
If you prefer to hang family photos in the main living space, opting for a gallery wall over a single photo will also have the same visual effect as a larger piece of artwork.
Utilize Vertical Space
While your ADU may be limited in floor space, you can take advantage of vertical space to draw the eye upward and create a sense of openness. You can do this through high ceilings, though you do need to be mindful that there are height restrictions when it comes to ADUs. You can also do this through more innovative solutions, like the use of open wall shelves and garden walls of herbs or decorative plants.
Add Mirrors
Wall mirrors are not only functional for getting ready in the morning, but they can make a smaller bedroom feel like a real master retreat by providing the illusion of additional space.
You can see we use mirrors a lot in the bedrooms we design to give an otherwise modestly sized bedroom a greater sense of space.
Create Definition with Area Rugs
Area rugs do not only provide warmth and texture to a space, making it feel homier, but when you are dealing with open-concept designs or multi-functional rooms, as we often are, area rugs can help to visually delineate the eating space from the living space.
Don’t Downplay Your Bathroom
A well-designed bathroom can feel luxurious, even if it is small. When budget allows, we encourage clients to opt for high-end fixtures or high-impact designs in the bathroom, especially if they are looking to maximize potential rental income.
Choose the Right Wood Tone
Wood floors are desirable among owner-occupants and renters alike, and choosing the right tone in a small space matters. If floors are too dark, they can actually absorb the room’s natural light, making the room feel dark even with ample daylight. If the floors are too light, the space can feel cold, especially with lighter walls. Opt for a tone that is light yet warm.
Also, with the exception of the bathrooms, try to implement consistent flooring throughout the house to create a seamless transition from room to room and an overall feeling of openness throughout the accessory unit.
